Here are four simple steps for preparing for an interview:
- Don’t panic. Find out as much as you can about the opportunity. Who is it for? What is the angle? Are they working to a specific deadline? Remember this is a great opportunity, not a threat.
- Prepare. Think about three simple key messages. Use plain English – would your mum get what you are trying to communicate here? Prepare some supporting facts or, even better, human anecdotes. Are there any obvious negative questions? Practice with a friend or colleague.
- The interview. Remember you are the expert and that you are in control. Let your passion for the subject or your company shine through. Are you being taken in a direction you don’t want to go in? Use the ABC approach – Acknowledge the question, find a Bridge to the point you want to Communicate.
- Follow up. Be as helpful as possible and follow up quickly with any further information you have promised. Suggest other contacts that support the story.
